Notla Scanner

Notla Scanner is the iOS and Android app that lets teachers scan student papers with their phone and send them directly to the related assignment or exam. Camera capture, page correction, and submission matching happen in a single flow; results appear within seconds on the Manage Uploads tab in the web interface.

What is Notla Scanner?

The scanner app adds three advantages over the web upload flow:

  • Optimized scanning. Paper edges are detected automatically, perspective is corrected, and extra filters compensate for quality loss from the physical environment.
  • Batch scans. Scan several students' papers one after another in a single flow and send them with one *Upload* tap.
  • Closing missing students. Use the "Missing" filter to see only students with no submission yet and upload each of their papers separately.

Same account as the web

Sign in with the same username and password; what you see in the app matches your role on the web. Organization selection also happens after sign-in.

Sign-in and courses

After you open the app and sign in, the home screen lists the active courses assigned to you. Each course card includes the class name, course name, and a *View Course* link, just as in the web interface. The Courses tab in the bottom bar always takes you back here; the avatar button on the right opens profile and session settings.

Course detail

When you tap a course, you see basic statistics (how many assignments/exams there are, how many submissions were received in total) and a list of active assignments/exams. Each assignment/exam row shows the title, description, current upload status (for example: Ready to upload), and the submission count. Tap the right-aligned arrow to open assignment/exam detail.

Course detail — Assignments/Exams list
  • The Active badge confirms the course is live; inactive courses cannot receive new submissions.
  • The Submitted counter (e.g. 10/25) shows the cumulative submission rate across all assignments/exams in the course.
  • The Details and Assignments/Exams tabs in the bottom bar switch views within the page.

Assignment/exam detail

Assignment/exam detail summarizes progress at the top with a circular indicator (submissions / total). Directly below are two large cards: Template (status of the blank template) and Uploads (the screen for scanning and sending student papers). Template status summarizes which setup stage the assignment/exam is in.

Performance Assignment detail; 7/9 progress, green "Template uploaded" badge on the Template card, "7/9 submitted" badge on the Uploads card.
Template ready — you can continue uploading
1st Written Exam detail; 1/8 progress, orange "Template required" warning on the Template card and the message "Upload the assignment template before accepting scans".
Template required — upload a template first
  • The Template uploaded badge means the draft prepared on the web is ready for matching. You can go straight to scanning papers.
  • The Template required badge means the assignment/exam is not yet matched to a draft on the web. Upload the template from the phone or the web first; scans cannot be matched without a template.
  • The circular progress indicator at the top (e.g. 7/9) shows how many students have completed submissions for this assignment/exam.

Uploading a template

Tapping the Template card opens the template upload screen. You can scan a blank exam/assignment paper with your camera or pick a PDF/image from your device. After the upload finishes, you still need to complete template setup (defining page regions) in the web interface.

Template screen; "Prepare the template — Scan with the camera or choose a PDF/image" drop zone and a blue info box: "After uploading, open this assignment in the web app to finish template setup".

Page regions are set in the web interface

Even if you upload the template from the scanner, you still need to define the *identity / question / answer* regions on the page in theMarking page regionsstep in the web interface. Until that step is done, student papers are not matched to students automatically.

Scanning with the camera

From the screen opened via the Uploads card, tap the *Upload Scans* area to open the camera. The app detects the paper edges automatically; tap Shutter or the large white circle at the bottom to capture. Use Flash to toggle the flash and Filters to toggle the color filter.

Camera screen; a scan framing a single paper; Flash, Filters, and Shutter buttons at the bottom plus a large white capture button.
Camera scan — edges are detected automatically
  • After a paper is captured, the app automatically opens the *Review scan stack* screen; from there you can add more papers to the same stack with + Add page.
  • Leaving Flash off gives more natural lighting; on very bright papers, a contrast-boosting filter from the *Filters* menu can improve readability.
  • The × icon in the top left cancels the scan and returns you to the uploads screen.

Reviewing the scan stack

After one or more pages are scanned, a preview screen opens. Each thumbnail represents a scanned page; the trash icon at the bottom right removes that page from the stack. Use + Add page at the top right to return to the camera and add more papers to the same stack. When you are ready, tap Upload at the bottom; all pages are sent to the cloud as a single scan.

"Review scan stack" screen; "2 Pages" label, Discard and "+ Add page" buttons; Page 1 and Page 2 thumbnails side by side, each with a delete icon; large "Upload" button in the bottom bar.

Several students can be in the same stack

The scan stack is uploaded as a single submission, but in the background each page is read via its own *identity region* and matched to the related student automatically. That way you can scan the whole class one after another and send everything with a single Upload tap.

Uploads — Scans tab

After upload, a *Success: Upload successful.* notice appears at the top of the screen, and the scan you sent shows at the top of the list with a Pending completion badge. As OCR and matching in the cloud finish, the badge updates to Completed; match statistics (successful / needs matching / failed pages) are summarized in the row.

Uploads screen; 7/9 progress at the top, "1 scan processing" badge, green "Success: Upload successful" toast at the top right; tabs: Students 9, Scans 8 (1 processing); top of the list is the Performans_Ödevi_s... scan with "Pending completion", then two ceng334-anonim-mt-short-1-2.pdf scans with "Completed" badges.
Uploads — Scans tab
  • The 1 scan processing badge at the top means at least one scan is still being processed in the cloud; once all badges are *Completed*, the student table is updated as well.
  • The Delete Scan link fully removes a mistakenly uploaded scan and all of its pages from the system.
  • Tap the Upload Scans area at the top to start a new scan flow immediately; you do not have to wait on this page — processing continues in the background.

Uploads — Students tab

The Students tab lists the submission status of every student assigned to the course. When you choose the Missing filter from the dropdown at the top right, only students with no submission remain; that is the fastest answer to "who is missing in class?" The purple Upload button on the right of each row starts a scan flow for that student only.

Uploads screen - Students tab; Upload Scans area at the top, Students 9 / Scans 8 tabs; search box next to an "Missing (2)" filter; Aydın Doğan (2380293) and Altay Kılıç (263337) rows, each with a purple Upload button on the right.
Missing filter — see students with no submission
  • The search box filters instantly by name or ID number; useful for quick access in large classes.
  • Besides Missing, *All* and *Completed* options are available; use them to check students who already have a submission.
  • The Upload button on a student row opens a scan flow assigned directly to that student; it speeds things up when you do not want to rely on identity reading.

Next step

All submissions from the scanner appear on theManage Uploadstab in the web interface. From there, go toAutomatic grading settingsto start automatic grading.
